Happy New Year to one and all! Thank you to everyone who came in from the cold to share in the warm conversation of January’s book club selection, Before We Were Yours, by Lisa Wingate.
Memphis, 1939. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four
younger siblings live a magical life aboard their family’s Mississippi River
shantyboat. But when their father must rush their mother to the hospital one
stormy night, Rill is left in charge—until strangers arrive in force. Wrenched from all that is
familiar and thrown into a Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage, the
Foss children are assured that they will soon be returned to their parents—but
they quickly realize the dark truth.
Aiken, South
Carolina, present day. Born into wealth and privilege, Avery Stafford seems to
have it all: a successful career as a federal prosecutor, a handsome fiancé,
and a lavish wedding on the horizon. But when Avery returns home to help her
father weather a health crisis, a chance encounter leaves her with
uncomfortable questions and compels her to take a journey through her family’s
long-hidden history, on a path that will ultimately lead either to devastation
or to redemption.
As you
may imagine, Before We Were Yours made for excellent, thought-provoking
conversation! Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Thank you Amanda for keeping us snowbirds in the loop. I had heard comments at the December meeting from people who'd read the book and really liked it. I recently ready the William Kent Krueger book, "This Tender Land" deals with those early "children's homes" in the 30's. Similar topic and very good. I also remember a movie we saw from Netflix (back in the DVD days) called "Sunshine and Oranges" I think, about children taken from homes and sent to Australia. It was based on true events and the woman who helped many of those children reconnect with their families later in life.
Greetings and salutations to you Mary!
As it turns out, you aren't the first to mention the title "This Tender Land", by William Kent Krueger, as an additional excellent read that has similar plot lines as our "Before We Were Yours" selection. It was also mentioned at our last book club meeting that Lisa Wingate partnered up with Judy Christie on the book titled "Before and After", a collection of real life stories of some of the children that survived the Tennessee Children's Home Society. It's a rather new book, and can't be found just yet in the Viking Library System, but it sound's incredibly interesting to those who'd like to know more.
Thank you for weighing in on the discussion from afar~ we hope you're spending lots of quality time in the sun~ get some vitamin D for us!
